Father Athanasius Abanulo

Rev.Fr. Athanasius Chidi Abanulo was born and raised in Umuezie Nguru Mbaise in Nigeria. He successfully concluded his Junior Seminary education at St Peter Claver Seminary Okpala in1980.

He attended Bigard Memorial Major Seminary at Ikot – Ekpene, an affiliate of the Pontifical Urban University Rome and obtained his Bachelor Degree in Philosophy (B. Phil.) in 1985.

After his degree, he taught at Maria Matter Ecclesia seminary in 1986 for a year. He also studied theology at Bigard Memorial Major Seminary Enugu Campus and obtained his Bachelors of Divinity in 1990.

He later studied at University of Nigeria Nsukka to obtain his PGDE (post graduate degree) in Education in 1995 and Masters in Educational Administration and Planning (M.ED) in 1999. As a missionary, he worked as Pastor in St Matthias Paris Congo in Chad Republic in 2001. He served in Oakland Catholic Diocese in California and established for them the first Nigerian Ethnic Catholic Community in 2003. He also served the Catholic Diocese of Nashville as the Coordinator of Nashville Hospital in 2014, as well as the Pastor of St. Vincent De Paul Church. Since 2018, Fr. A as called, moved down to the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham, AL and was assigned by Bishop Robert Baker as the UAB Chaplain. Currently, he has enrolled as a Chaplain Resident at UAB Hospital. He is companionate and devoted to his work. Father A cares for those who are entrusted to him. He was ordained in 1990 as a Catholic Priest and has been serving in this position for 29 years.
