Drexel Rayford

Drexel Rayford came to Birmingham from Richmond, VA to be the Manager of Community Support Teams at UAB Pastoral Care in February, 2014.

Previously, he served as the senior pastor of Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Richmond, VA and has been the senior pastor of several churches in Virginia and Kentucky, and served for a number of years as an international volunteer missions coordinator for the Virginia Baptist state association.

In all of those capacities, Drexel employed the method of team ministry based on the support team concept.

He studied at Southern Seminary and in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Louisville School of Medicine under the mentorship of Wayne E. Oates. After his initial training, he went on to serve for seven years as a chaplain and pastoral counselor in both inpatient and outpatient clinics.

Drexel earned three graduate degrees: Master of Divinity, Master of Theology, and a Ph.D. in the Psychology of Religion.

He has spent a good deal of time as a musician and story teller and also collaborated with colleagues to co-found the Epiphany Institute of Spirituality, a partnership devoted to teaching the ancient Contemplative tradition of Christianity.
