January 27, 1969

–On this day┬áin UAB Pastoral Care History–

In the beginning, there was one Chaplain, who was paid part-time by nearby Highlands United Methodist Church.

Rev. Kenneth L. Bohannon began as a Chaplain at the University of Alabama hospital in June, 1968, when he was assigned as an Associate Pastor at Highlands United Methodist Church and Chaplain to UAB.

On November 12, 1968, a letter was written to Dr. John Kirkland, Chief of Staff of the Hospitals (The Kirklin Clinic namesake) offering the services of Rev. Bohannon as Chaplain in the University of Alabama hospitals and clinics on a half-time schedule.

On January 24, 1969, Mr. Robert W. Holters, Hospital Administrator, confirmed the offer and on January 27, 1969, Ken Bohannon began as Chaplain of the University of Alabama hospitals with an office on the second floor of the North Wing.  His financial support came from Mr. Edwin M. Dixon and Dr. S. Richardson Hill Jr.  Ken served as a chaplain at UAB until June 1, 1993 with 25 years of service.

On June 16, 1969,┬áChaplain Bohannon was appointed full-time as Chaplain to the (United Methodist) Church’s Ministry and as the Chaplain at University of Alabama hospitals.

Thank you Ken Bohannon.  Because you were here for our patients, families, and employees then, we continue the tradition you began.

Ken Bohannon died on October 3, 2009, and left in his will a gift to UAB Pastoral Care that is now being used to educate clergy and lay persons in the faith community to care for persons with healthcare challenges.
